Zuby Ejiofor Emerges as Top NBA Draft Prospect Following Standout St. John's Season

Zuby Ejiofor, the St. John's center who earned 2026 Big East Player of the Year honors, has positioned himself as a serious NBA prospect ahead of the draft. The 6-foot-8 big man helped guide the Red Storm to their first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 since 1999, capturing the attention of NBA scouts and franchises including the New York Knicks, who recently held private workouts with him.

From Late Bloomer to Conference Standout

Ejiofor's path to prominence came through delayed development rather than early stardom. Born in Texas to Nigerian parents—his father Collins is a businessman and his mother Sandra is a nurse—Ejiofor spent his early childhood in Nigeria before returning to Dallas in sixth grade. He did not begin playing basketball until his early teenage years and remained largely under the radar through his early high school years at Garland High School outside Dallas.

His breakthrough came before his junior season at Garland, when he rapidly ascended from a three-star recruit to a top-60 prospect in his class. That season, Ejiofor averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds while earning all-state honors. He committed to Kansas but saw limited playing time as a freshman before transferring to St. John's to play under coach Rick Pitino.

The St. John's Impact and Draft Considerations

As a junior with the Red Storm, Ejiofor started nearly every game and earned first-team All-Big East recognition alongside the Most Improved Player award in the conference. He formed part of the league's strongest frontcourt alongside forwards Dillon Mitchell and Bryce Hopkins, who also project as draft selections. Pitino publicly endorsed Ejiofor's fit with the Knicks, stating the team could benefit from a defender and rebounder capable of scoring and passing.

NBA evaluators project Ejiofor as a top-40 talent in the class despite certain limitations. Analysts compare his profile to Detroit Pistons centers Isaiah Stewart and Paul Reed—players who combine undersized strength with motor-driven effort on defense. However, scouts note Ejiofor does not match those players' defensive rebounding consistency, a critical requirement for the center position. His shooting ability and rim-finishing touch also remain unproven at the professional level. Still, multiple teams have reportedly expressed confidence in his potential with multi-year guaranteed contracts or development pathways.

St. John's has not produced three players selected in a single draft since 1983. The program's last first-round pick came in 2012 when Maurice Harkless went to Philadelphia at number 15, and the last player drafted at all was Sir'Dominic Pointer, selected in the second round by Cleveland in 2015.
