Aaron Farinacci Arrested on Arson Charge in Connection With Spokane County Wildfire

A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree arson in connection with one of three major wildfires burning in Spokane County, Washington. Aaron F. Farinacci was taken into custody Monday afternoon and is being held on a $1 million bond, according to Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels. The arrest represents the first criminal action linked to the fires that have forced tens of thousands of residents from their homes.

Scale of the Wildfire Crisis

The three simultaneous fires in Spokane County have created an unprecedented evacuation emergency. Nearly 65,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes as crews battle to contain the rapidly spreading blazes. The Old Trails Fire, which began Saturday afternoon and is the subject of Farinacci's arrest, is one of three major fires currently consuming the region. Authorities have confirmed that more than 700 structures have been destroyed, and the fires have burned in excess of 8,000 acres with zero percent containment since ignition.

Fire officials are racing against worsening conditions, with temperatures expected to climb into the 90s by Wednesday. Regional weather patterns have compounded the crisis—seventeen major fires across Washington have burned more than 260,000 acres collectively. Oregon faces an even more severe situation, with wildfires there burning 2 million acres, surpassing the state's previous wildfire record in what experts characterize as the worst fire season in more than 30 years, driven largely by climate change.

Investigation and Response Efforts

While Farinacci's arrest marks a breakthrough in the Old Trails Fire investigation, officials stated the causes of the other two fires remain under investigation. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson praised first responders for their "fantastic job" managing the "really chaotic hours" when fires entered Spokane neighborhoods. Authorities have accounted for nearly all individuals who called emergency services during the initial crisis, though 14 people remain uncontacted—a figure Ferguson emphasized does not indicate they are missing, as their phones may be dead or they may have simply not returned calls. No deaths or confirmed injuries have been reported thus far.
