Asda Partners with Ocado to Transform Online Grocery Delivery Starting Early 2027
Asda and Ocado have announced a partnership to overhaul the supermarket's online grocery operations starting early 2027.

Asda, Britain's third-largest supermarket, has agreed to deploy Ocado's technology platform across its online grocery business from early 2027. The partnership will upgrade Asda's existing e-commerce infrastructure for home deliveries from stores and "dark stores"—smaller distribution hubs not open to the public—while also enabling order fulfillment through third-party apps including Uber Eats, Deliveroo, and Just Eat.
Expanding Asda's Online Capabilities
The rollout covers multiple service channels critical to modern grocery retail. Asda customers will be able to place scheduled orders, make last-minute purchases with short lead times, and use click-and-collect services through the company's website and mobile applications. Unlike Ocado's traditional model, which relies on large automated warehouses filled with robots, this partnership will operate through Asda's existing store network and purpose-built distribution centers.
The deal addresses a significant competitive challenge for Asda. The supermarket's UK market share has declined from 14.3 percent before its 2021 acquisition by private equity firm TDR Capital and entrepreneur Mohsin Issa to 11.5 percent, according to Kantar data. This places Asda only marginally ahead of discount competitor Aldi, which holds 10.8 percent market share. The partnership represents a strategic effort to strengthen Asda's position against both established rivals and discount chains reshaping grocery competition.
Implications for Ocado and the Grocery Market
For Ocado, the agreement marks a significant validation after years of financial instability. The online grocery technology provider has rarely achieved profitability since its founding 26 years ago, despite reaching a market valuation exceeding £22 billion during pandemic-driven e-commerce growth. Ocado's share price had fallen to £2.08 before the announcement but rose 9 percent following the deal, making it the top performer on the FTSE 250 that morning. The company now projects reaching cash-flow positivity in the second half of 2026.
Industry analysts view the arrangement as moderately negative for Tesco and Sainsbury's, though both retailers maintain established e-commerce operations. Bloomberg Intelligence characterized Asda as an appropriate test case for Ocado's technology, citing the supermarket's large store footprint, relatively narrow product range of branded items, and demonstrated online participation in the teens percentage range.
