Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida announced on Friday that she will not seek reelection, ending her House career that began in 2011. The announcement came just days after the 83-year-old Democratic lawmaker dismissed retirement speculation as a "crazy rumor". Wilson represents Florida's 24th Congressional District, a heavily Democratic seat encompassing parts of northern Miami-Dade County and southeastern Broward County.

Wilson told the Miami Herald that she had made the decision to retire some time ago but wanted to handle the announcement with careful timing. Her primary concern centered on the 5000 Role Models program, a mentorship initiative for minority boys that she created over 30 years ago. She expressed worry about the program's future once she stepped away from her position.

The congresswoman explained her reasoning for the delayed announcement to the Herald, stating that she remained uncertain how state leadership would respond to her departure. She worried that announcing her retirement could make District 24 vulnerable to redistricting or political challenges. "With me not here, would that weaken the survival of District 24?" she asked, emphasizing that her presence as a strong candidate had protected the Democratic seat's electoral viability.

Wilson, recognizable for her distinctive bedazzled cowboy hats and brightly colored suits, has been a prominent Democratic voice during both Trump administrations. Her 15-year tenure in Congress has included frequent criticism of former and current Republican leadership.
