Frontier Airlines Suspends Denver Service at Knoxville Airport but Plans Seasonal Return

Frontier Airlines will discontinue its regular Denver service at McGhee Tyson Airport following August 17, though the low-cost carrier intends to resume operations on a seasonal basis. The suspension marks the latest shift in Knoxville's airport operations as the facility reshapes its route network and prepares major infrastructure improvements. Other carriers including Allegiant, Southwest, and United will continue providing nonstop Denver connections while Frontier evaluates its schedule.

Current Service and Historical Context

Frontier has operated three weekly flights from Knoxville to Denver since 2011, using the Colorado hub to connect passengers to numerous domestic and international destinations including San Francisco, Seattle, and Cancun. The airline represents one of six carriers serving McGhee Tyson Airport. Airport officials stated that the departure will be temporary, with Frontier expected to return with seasonal flights once scheduling allows.

Broader Airport Expansion Amid Industry Changes

McGhee Tyson was ranked as the fastest-growing major U.S. airport in 2024 and continues setting passenger records. Southwest Airlines officially joined the airport in March, adding nonstop Las Vegas service and complementing United's new New Jersey route that improves connectivity to the New York City region. The airport is simultaneously undertaking capital projects including a new parking garage and terminal renovations as part of long-term development plans.

Frontier's withdrawal occurs as the airline positions itself following the 2026 closure of competitor Spirit Airlines. The Denver-based carrier has bid aggressively for Spirit's former flight slots and reported adjusted revenue of approximately $1.1 billion during the early months of 2026, demonstrating ongoing financial operations despite route adjustments.

Governance Changes at McGhee Tyson

The airport's operational landscape is also shifting administratively. For the first time in its history, McGhee Tyson's governing board will be primarily appointed by Tennessee state officials rather than selected through previous structures. The Tennessee legislature vacated the boards of all major metropolitan airports in the state, resulting in the appointment of new board members as of July 21 who will help guide the facility through its expansion phase.
