An independent autopsy performed for Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old whose body was discovered on Horn Island after a Fourth of July boating incident, could not determine the cause or manner of his death. Forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. classified the death as undetermined pending further investigation in a preliminary report released this week. Official state autopsy findings and toxicology results, which remain outstanding, may provide additional insight into the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death.

Wells' body was found along the Horn Island shoreline on July 6, with initial assessments from local officials suggesting accidental drowning with no indication of foul play. However, the family, represented by attorney Ben Crump, commissioned the independent autopsy after expressing concerns that details surrounding the death "are not adding up." The case has drawn significant national attention, partly due to Mississippi's historical context and questions about whether racial factors played a role in the investigation's handling.

Limitations and Outstanding Questions

Dr. Mitchell documented several constraints that affected the independent autopsy's conclusions. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office retained portions of Wells' remains during the initial autopsy conducted on July 7—a standard pathological practice—limiting the scope of subsequent examination. Toxicology results were unavailable at the time of the independent review, and decomposition had obscured potential injuries, complicating the analysis.

Critical details remain unresolved, including how Wells entered the water, whether he sustained neck injuries or internal brain bleeding, and what substances were present in his stomach. Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd previously confirmed that no immediate signs of physical injury were apparent on the body. The independent examination similarly found no obvious lacerations, fractures, or deep-tissue trauma, though such findings do not exclude other causes of death.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department has conducted interviews with numerous witnesses and is collaborating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the case.
