Injury Impact on Squad Depth

Doris departed the Croke Park final after seven minutes with a foot injury that has proven severe enough to rule him out of all three summer matches. O'Brien, 28, was forced off late in the first half following a groin injury sustained during an aerial contest. Both players' absences compound existing injury concerns for head coach Andy Farrell, who is also managing the unavailability of fly-half Jack Crowley and loosehead prop Andrew Porter, along with nine other squad members.

The timing represents a significant setback for Doris, who missed the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia the previous summer due to shoulder surgery. His leadership absence comes as Ireland prepares to face the Wallabies on July 4, followed by fixtures against Japan on July 11 and New Zealand at Eden Park on July 18.

Ward Brothers Earn Opportunity

Zac Ward, 27, and Bryn Ward, 21, sons of former Ireland international Andy Ward, have both previously participated in extended Ireland squads as training panellists and featured for an Ireland XV against England A in February. Zac converted from back row to wing and scored 15 tries across 20 appearances for Ulster during the 2025–26 season, while Bryn, a former Ireland Under-20 international, made 20 appearances across the United Rugby Championship and Challenge Cup, scoring four tries. Their selection brings the total number of uncapped players in Farrell's 36-member squad to seven.
