Jack P. Shepherd Reveals Kylie Platt's Death as Only Coronation Street Storyline He Took Home in 26 Years

Jack P. Shepherd, who has portrayed David Platt for 26 years on Coronation Street, has identified Kylie Platt's death as the singular storyline that left him emotionally affected beyond the set. The actor discussed the pivotal narrative on the On the Sofa podcast, marking a decade since the episode's broadcast.

The Storyline That Stayed With Him

Speaking on the podcast he co-hosts with Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) and Colson Smith (formerly Craig Tinker), Shepherd reflected on the tragic sequence where his on-screen wife Kylie, played by Paula Lane, was stabbed by Clayton Hibbs while defending friend Gemma Winter. The character died in David's arms on the street, becoming a watershed moment in the actor's career at the soap.

Shepherd described the experience with candour: "It's the first time ever, ever working at Corrie, and still is where I've actually taken a storyline home with me and been really, really upset and feeling a loss when no one's dead." His co-star Price added context to the production demands, explaining that the cast spent three weeks in emotional immersion, requiring them to access dark psychological places to authenticate their performances.

Production and Performance Impact

The physical and mental toll manifested during filming. Shepherd noted he was unable to complete a standard line run—the pre-shoot rehearsal where actors run through scripts. Instead, only two takes were filmed for the climactic scene where David holds Kylie's lifeless body. The scripted direction called for David to cry out, but Shepherd deviated from the written instruction, instead delivering a silent scream that became the defining moment of the sequence.

Price's account underscored the authenticity of the cast's emotional experience: "It was like, you actually physically went through it. We watched it. And then there was all the aftermath and you went, 'Oh?' We were all involved. It felt literally like she'd gone." Earlier this month, Shepherd marked the decade anniversary on social media, calling it the "most challenging storyline" he had undertaken during his tenure at the programme.

Life Beyond the Set

Away from the soap, Shepherd has expanded his personal life. He welcomed his daughter Constance last month with his wife Hanni, who opted for a pool birth at their home. The actor is also father to son Reuben and daughter Nyla-Rae with former partner Lauren Shippey, and son Greyson with former partner Sammy Milewski. Notably, his son Reuben recently landed a role in a Manchester musical, following in his father's performance footsteps.
