Leeds United Advances in Negotiations to Sign James Trafford from Manchester City

Leeds United have progressed in negotiations with Manchester City for goalkeeper James Trafford, with the England international reportedly leaning toward a move to Elland Road. The 23-year-old has emerged as Leeds' primary goalkeeping target after the club lost two senior keepers during the summer transfer window.

The Transfer Situation

Trafford returned to Manchester City from Burnley, where he had established himself as a dependable Premier League goalkeeper. However, the club's deadline-day acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma relegated the England international to a secondary role during the 2025-26 campaign. Trafford made 17 appearances for City, including starts in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup as the club secured both trophies, but the arrangement fell short of his expectations. In February, Trafford publicly acknowledged that being second choice "wasn't what I expected" and that he had "tried to guard against the situation happening."

Leeds have accelerated their pursuit after losing both Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier this summer. Darlow departed on a free transfer to Manchester United, while Meslier moved to Arsenal, leaving a significant gap in the goalkeeping department. This departure of two senior options has made securing a proven goalkeeper a priority for the West Yorkshire club.

Competition and Player Appeal

Leeds face competition from Newcastle United and Aston Villa, though reports indicate the Elland Road club has made the most progress in discussions. Newcastle had previously pursued Trafford during the previous transfer window before his City move materialized. The Magpies have since begun exploring alternative options, including Brighton's Carl Rushworth and Parma's Zion Suzuki, in addition to signing 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Reims.

Trafford's credentials offer genuine appeal to Leeds. During his final two seasons at Burnley under Scott Parker, he was an integral component of a defense that conceded just 16 goals across 46 Championship matches as the club secured promotion to the Premier League. He earned his England debut in March and was included in Thomas Tuchel's squad for the World Cup, though he did not feature in tournament matches. At Leeds, he would become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, a significant contrast to his current standing at City.
