Luke Evans Earns Tony Nomination for Broadway Debut as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror Revival
Luke Evans earned his first Tony nomination for playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show Broadway revival, which opened April 23.
Welsh actor Luke Evans has secured his first Tony nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, recognizing his Broadway debut as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 2026 revival of The Rocky Horror Show. The production, directed by Tony Award-winner Sam Pinkleton and opened at Studio 54 on April 23, received nine Tony nominations overall, including Best Revival of a Musical.
An Unexpected Challenge
Evans, standing 6 feet 8 inches tall, towers over his castmates including Stephanie Hsu, Juliette Lewis, and Harvey Guillén while performing in platform-heeled boots, a corset, and a jock strap as the pleasure-seeking mad scientist. The role marks a significant departure from his established career in action films, including appearances in Clash of the Titans, the Fast and the Furious franchise, Immortals, and Dracula Untold.
Director Pinkleton outlined the demanding qualities required for the character: "He had to be a truly tremendous actor. He had to be a real comedian, like a clown. He had to have a killer voice. He had to be terrifying, and also tender." The director emphasized the need for someone who embodied queerness authentically and could offer a fresh interpretation of the role made iconic by Tim Curry. Evans, who trained in musical theater in college and performed in West End productions including Miss Saigon and Rent, emerged as the ideal choice.
Evans acknowledged the role was not on his bucket list. "I didn't even think I possibly could pull it off, to be honest, but I did get excited about the fact that I love a challenge," he said. However, his early theater career nearly ended before his film success. Facing financial instability and uncertain job prospects, Evans considered leaving the entertainment industry entirely before his fortunes changed through Hollywood opportunities.
Broadway Recognition and Future Performance
The production has earned nine Tony nominations, with Evans' nomination joined by recognitions for other cast and design achievements. Evans has described the role as one of the most rewarding of his career, praising the camp, glam, and powerful energy of the character. He will perform at the Tony Awards ceremony on June 7, where the broadcast will reach a global television audience. For Evans, born in Pontypool and raised in Aberbargoed, Wales, the nomination represents a major milestone in his stage career and a return to his theatrical roots after years in cinema.
