Paul Rowley Steps Down as St Helens Head Coach After Difficult Season

Paul Rowley has resigned as St Helens head coach with immediate effect, departing the Super League club less than a year after his appointment. The 51-year-old's departure comes amid a difficult campaign marked by injuries and inconsistent performances, with the club currently sixth in the table, six points adrift of leaders Leeds Rhinos. Assistant coach Eamon O'Carroll will assume interim charge ahead of Friday's derby fixture against Wigan Warriors.

The Challenge at St Helens

Rowley took the reins at St Helens before the current season, having previously managed Salford Red Devils through their financially constrained 2025 campaign. His spell at Saints proved far more problematic than anticipated, with the club losing six of their past ten matches across all competitions. The injury list grew substantially during his tenure, creating a cascade of challenges that ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.

Club chairman Eamonn McManus acknowledged the difficult circumstances in a statement, recognizing that Rowley faced "extra challenges" that were beyond typical managerial obstacles. McManus pledged that the organization would work to preserve its status as Super League's most decorated institution and restore the club to title contention.
