Paul Wesley's Chemistry With Nina Dobrev Made The Vampire Diaries Pilot Undeniable, Creators Reveal
The two actors remain close and will reunite in the Hulu drama You Deserve to Know. Wesley himself acknowledged the significance of that opening encounter.

The casting of Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore proved transformative for The Vampire Diaries after a single opening scene convinced the show's creators that their supernatural drama would connect with audiences. In interviews for Entertainment Weekly's oral history of the series, showrunner Julie Plec and creator Kevin Williamson revealed that Wesley's chemistry with costar Nina Dobrev during their first on-screen meeting—not the later "hello brother" moment between vampire brothers—became the pilot's defining asset.
The Scene That Changed Everything
Williamson described the pivotal moment when Stefan removes a leaf from Elena's hair, calling it the series' true selling point. "I love the moment where Stefan and Elena first meet and he picks the leaf out of her hair," the creator explained. "I think they have beautiful chemistry when she says, 'We have history together.' I saw it in the monitor, and I went, 'If this show works, it's going to be because they have chemistry.'" Director Marcos Siega collaborated with the cinematographer to enhance the scene using a practical lighting effect—a white bounce board positioned to create subtle illumination beneath Wesley and Dobrev's eyes, producing an otherworldly quality that suggested an immediate connection between the characters.
Wesley himself acknowledged the significance of that opening encounter. "I don't know what it was about that scene that made everyone go, 'Oh yeah that's it,' but to me, I sort of knew that the chemistry would be there and that the show would work," he reflected. Plec echoed the consensus, describing the instant recognition of Wesley's casting decision: "When he stepped into the role of Stefan, he just sort of miraculously and immediately made all our hearts go pitter-patter."
The Path to Perfect Casting
Wesley's path to the role was not straightforward. The actor auditioned multiple times before securing the part of the brooding vampire, while Dobrev underwent approximately a dozen auditions for Elena. Notably, Dobrev initially harbored doubts about Wesley during their first chemistry read, yet the network ultimately selected him for the role. Once filming began, their on-screen connection proved undeniable, validating the decision to cast him opposite the Bulgarian-American actress.
Reunion on the Horizon
The two stars have maintained a close relationship since The Vampire Diaries concluded its original run. Recently, Wesley and Dobrev announced their collaboration on an upcoming Hulu drama series titled You Deserve to Know, adapted from Aggie Blum Thompson's bestseller by Grand Hotel developer Brian Tanen. The project will follow three suburban couples whose friendship fractures after a husband is murdered. Unlike their roles in The Vampire Diaries, the characters Wesley and Dobrev will portray in the new series will not share a romantic connection.
