Wrexham Women Face Pyunik in Historic European Debut Under Reynolds and Mac Ownership

Wrexham Women will compete in their first-ever European tournament when they face Pyunik of Armenia in a Champions League qualifying semi-final. The match takes place at the historic Racecourse Stadium following the squad's championship victory in the domestic league last season. Hollywood ownership duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have prioritized backing the women's team as part of their broader investment in the club.

The European Opportunity

Wednesday's encounter against Pyunik marks a significant milestone for Wrexham Women, who secured their continental berth by winning the Genero Adran Premier last season. The semi-final victory would propel them toward a final scheduled for July 25 at the same venue, with either Glentoran of Northern Ireland or Riga FC of Latvia awaiting as potential opponents.

Head coach Jenny Sugarman, who previously managed West Bromwich Albion, emphasized the owners' commitment to the project. "They're both incredibly excited," she stated, noting that Rob Mac remains actively engaged with the squad's operations. The coaching staff has successfully attracted higher-caliber players to the roster, reflecting the elevated resources now available to the women's program.

Restoring European Football to Wrexham

The women's team now carries forward a European legacy abandoned by the men's side. Between 1972 and 1995, Wrexham's men competed in the Cup Winners Cup, facing elite clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, AS Roma, and FC Porto. The men's team lost European eligibility when Welsh clubs were excluded from the competition, leaving Wrexham without continental representation for decades.

Sugarman acknowledged the historic significance of the moment. "There's some big names that the club have faced in the past," she said. "We want to try and get into that bit as well when you're pulling that opposition that everybody's heard of." The women's success represents both a sporting achievement and the continuation of institutional tradition under new ownership.
